sm-2011We’ve accomplished so much together! Therefore it’s bittersweet for me to share the news that after a dozen years at Zero Waste Washington, I’ll be leaving in the fall. Our smart and energetic Board of Directors is working with me, our project manager Eva Dale, and a skilled consultant to create a thoughtful and successful transition.

We will be hiring an Executive Director to hold our zero waste vision, provide strong and collaborative leadership, and build organizational capacity. I’m excited to see what fresh energy and ideas the new Director will bring to Zero Waste Washington! I look forward to supporting the new Director as they join the organization (there will be ample overlap of our time) and seeing what emerges.

The Board remains wholly committed to building impact in our three strategic program areas: Advocating for big-picture statewide policies and producer responsibility; catalyzing projects that model zero waste at the community level; and integrating waste prevention into our work. Eva will continue focusing on community-based sharing projects to decrease consumption and build community connections. The new Director will add their voice to zero waste issues and build organizational capacity to implement and grow our policy work.

I consider myself incredibly lucky to have been part of Zero Waste Washington’s groundbreaking and effective work for the past dozen years. From producer-provided programs for electronics and fluorescent lights to the recent opening of the Tacoma Tool Library, I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished and believe that we are positioned to have an even bigger impact in the next dozen years.

I look forward to wholeheartedly supporting Zero Waste Washington into the future, and encourage you to do the same. Our members make our work possible!

Feel free to call me (206-441-1790) if you have questions about this transition or want to hear more about our plans. Thanks for your ongoing commitment and support!

With gratitude,
Suellen Mele, Program Director

P.S. Please help us spread the word to interested candidates who want to commit their passion and skills to make a real difference! You can find the Executive Director Position Announcement here.
